10-2 SOOW Cable
10/2 SOOW portable cord is an industrial grade wire of the portable SOOW wire family. The word SOOW is infers a portable wire with oil and water resistance wire products. They are renowned wire products specially crafted for heavy duty industrial applications of up to 600 volts. SOOW cables are graded according to sizes. It is graded according to the AWG sizes, a standard used in North America for sizing wire gauges. Their sizes vary between 2 AWG and 18 AWG.
- 10 Gauge wire
- Current capacity of 30 amperes
- 2 copper conductors
- Rated at 600 volts hence heavy duty
- Conductor stranding 104/30
- Weighs at 225 Lbs per 1000 feet length
- Insulation wall thickness 0.045 inches
- Nominal jacket thickness of 0.615 inches
This cable has two conductors which are annealed bare copper. Annealing is the process whereby copper is heated at a controlled temperature consistently until it becomes smooth and flexible. Annealed copper ensures transportation and installation is done with ease due to its flexibility. It also has a high conductivity rate of 30 amps because of the low resistance to the flow of current of the conductor. The conductor is of class K stranding in accordance to ASTM B 174.
Stranding is done to enhance the flexibility of the cable and so that the conductors carry uttermost current. The conductor size enables it to effectively transmit 600 volts of 30 amps current.
The 10 AWG 2C Cable’s insulation is made of Ethylene Propylene (EPDM). EPDM is water-tight rubber made from saturated chains of polyethylene. The insulation prevents direct contact with the conductor wires to keep cable handlers from risks of electrocution. It also protects the conductor from external damages caused by chemicals and abrasive forces. EPDM is a very flexible and robust material and can withstand impact and abrasive forces. It can also withstand oils, sunlight, acids, water, industrial solvents and weather changes which are quite common in the conventional industrial environments.
10/2 SOOW Cable jacket is made from Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). CPE is a thermoplastic elastomer which is produced through the chlorination of polyethylene. The cable jacket is a vital part in the cable’s design, it protects the inner components of the cable from external damage including the insulator. It’s like an added reinforcement to the insulator. This material is very strong and can withstand mechanical impacts and abrasive forces. It is also resistant to oils, flames, water, sunlight, acids and impulses.
Industrial ratings and approvals
The 10/2 portable SOOW cable has been approved by various international bodies and standards organizations. These organizations test whether the attributes stated by the manufacturer are legitimate. It also tests if the cable is safe for use. It is essential to watch out for these certifications. This cable has the following industrial ratings and approvals;
- National Electric Code (NEC) 501.140 Class I Div. 2
- NEC Article 400
It can be used in various industrial applications not exceeding 600 volts, 30 amps a temperature of 900C. Its most common applications include; control devices such as push button remotes, industrial machinery, handy compressors, oil rigs and shipyards though it’s not considered as a marine cable. It can also be used to supply power in water purification systems. Can be used in both indoors and outdoors and can be installed in ducts and cable trays. This cable is durable since it can withstand most chemical and physical impacts and can last you a life time in your industrial applications.
10 AWG 2 Conductor cable is sold per foot. The maximum you can purchase at an instance is 1000 feet which weighs 225 lbs.
