12/2 SOOW Black
Coming in black, the 12/2 SOOW black is a heavy duty power cable specially used in marina and industrial environments. It is denoted as a 12/2 cable to mean that the cable size is 12 AWG while 2 means it has 2 conductors. For the purpose of easy identification the conductors which are made of bare copper are color- coded. The flexible portable cable is available at a minimum length of 10 feet and a maximum length of 1000 feet.
It is a unique oil and water resistant cable ideal for both internal and external use as the cable. The premium grade oil resistant Ethylene Propylene insulation together with the Chlorinated Polyethylene jacket go a long way in ensuring the cable operates maximally even in very harsh environments.
Key features of the 12/2 SOOW black
- 2 conductors
- 12 gauge
- EPDM insulation
- CPE jacket
- Flame retardant
- Water, sunlight and oil resistant
- 600 volts
- 18 AWG- 2 AWG
- 65/30 conductor stranding
- 184 Lbs
- 25 amps
- Highly flexible
The 12/2 SOOW black comes with two conductors. These are made of fully annealed stranded bare copper. Although copper is a great conductor, it is taken through the annealing process for it to become soft. This makes the cable flexible enough to bend and cut easily during installation and termination. The conductor can transmit up to 600 volts of electric current at 25 amps. The cable only weighing 184 Lbs is very portable and easily fits into circuit ducts because the outside diameter of the conductor is 0.570 inches. The conductor stranding stands at 65/30 while the conductor size is 12 AWG. The conductor can be used for different purposes as it measures 18 AWG to 2 AWG.
The 12/2 SOOW black has an insulation made of premium grade oil resistant Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM). The insulation is put in place so as to safeguard the conductor from damages. EPDM is a synthetic rubber with low toxicity, excellent dielectric strength, and outstanding resistance to abrasion, ozone, het and weather. It also works to prevent short circuiting and electrocution.
The jacket comes after the insulation and its sole purpose is to protect both the conductor and the insulation from chemical and physical damage. This power cable has a black jacketing made of Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). CPE is the most ideal material as it is water, sunlight and oil resistant. This indicates that the 12/2 SOOW black can be used in either hot or wet temperature. The jacket is also flame resistant making CPE safe for use in the event of a fire break out. During combustion CPE produces a compound that makes the cable flame retardant. The jacket together with the EPDM insulation make the cable to be resistant to impacts and thus why it is ideal in marine and industrial set ups.
Certifications and approvals
The 12/2 SOOW black cable has been approved as a safe cable by various bodies and standards. The following are the bodies this cable is in line with;
- NEC Article 400
- NEC 501. 140 Class I Division 2
This a versatile cable used for heavy duty power supply in industrial set ups. Even when fully submerged in water, the cable will still perform as expected. This is because the CPE jacket is water resistant. It is for this reason why this cable is used in marine environments. The 12/2 SOOW black can be used in both humid and dry environments. The cable is particularly used in systems for water purification, industrial machinery, handy-compressors and has controls of such as push button remotes.
