16/5 SOOW - BLACK
SOOW cables are sturdy power systems supply cables specially designed for use with industrial machines. SOOW is an acronym for service wires with water and oil resistant insulation, and jacketing. Which means that these cables can give uttermost performance in wet and oily environments like ships and oil rigs. 16/5 AWG SOOW Black means that cable is a 16-gauge wire with five conductors. The five conductors makes it a viable option for any power supply system which uses three phase current so the cable can work well with a wide range of tool and equipment portable tools and equipment like light motors, battery leads, lifts, aquariums among other applications. The 16 AWG 5 Conductor wire is aflexible and portable cord; it can be folded into a tiny mound which is easy to carry around and fit into cable trays or ducts.

16/5 SOOW has a five conductors all of which are made of annealed copper wire. The conductors are fully annealed because the process steadily raises its temperature resulting into a malleable conductor with better ampacity and flexibility. The five conductors are then stranded in line with 26/30 class K Stranding per ASTM B174 forming a concentric core which gives the cable structural rigidity despite the fact that it is flexible. The resulting conductor structure is compact, durable and easy to handle.
The main purpose of an insulator is to protect the cable from adverse effect of the environment like changes in weather, water, corrosion, industrial chemicals, UV rays and moisture. Moreover, it also protect the cable handlers from electrocution so it’s a life-saving attribute of the SOOW wire. This portable wire cable is insulated with EPDM; Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. EPDM is a highly saturated monomer which form a watertight chain of propylene so the cable can work under the harshest of condition and the condition will not affect its performance over a lifetime. With an EPDM insulation, the cable works within a wide range of temperatures of between -400 and 900C. Basically this cable does well in both hot and wet climatic conditions which is essentially any part of the world. The five conductors are insulated in black, white, red, green, orange color codes for easy identification.
Conventionally, jackets enhance the security of a cable system and brings all its components together. It’s what keeps the five conductors of 16 AWG SOOW in one shape. This cables jacket is a thermocouple resin, black CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene). This is one of the toughest materials currently available in the market for cable jacketing. CPE has three amazing properties; water and oil resistance, flexibility and fire resistance. Water and oil resistance is an important attribute because it safely protects the conducts from interference with water/oil/moisture. However tough, the jacket is very flexible, you can fold it over the years and it won’t develop lines of weakness so the cable is generally very portable. Thermocouples like CPE transform into a hard fire retardant compound in case of fire breakouts so it will slow down the fire and reduce the chances of fire interfering with power transmissions.
16/5 SOOW Cable is a viable candidate for a wide range of light industrial applications which need a small three phase cable of 600 volts 8 amps power. Based on water resistance, it could work as a marine cable though it’s really not categorized as one. The most common applications are:
• Light motors
• Battery leads
• Industrial tools
• Mining tools
• Generator wire
• Handy compressors
• Push button remotes
Generally, this is an abrasion resistant cable which would work well in a busy punishing environment. It give steady transmission for years without showing signs of wear and tear so many technicians opt for it on long term projects.
Approvals and Certification
Approvals and certifications is a sure way of determining if the properties alleged by the manufacturer are genuine. Certification by international standards bodies ensures that the cable has the appropriate safety features to protect the end user. The 16/5 SOOW - BLACK is has the following approvals:
• NEC (National Electrical Code) 501. 140 Class I Division 2
• Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)
• Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
• Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
• NEC Article 400
