6/2 SOOW Black Portable Power Cable 600V UL CSA

Allowable Ampacity For 6/2 SOOW Cord UL/CSA- Black: 55 Amps

Applications:

SOOW is a water and weather-resistant service cable with an oil-resistant jacket and insulation that meets the requirements of Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and CSA. It is a portable electrical cable that offers superior resistance to abrasion. The cable famously stays intact when in contact with a hot surface, making it perfect for tough applications, including compressors, industrial machinery, push-button remotes, industrial control systems, and water purification systems. SO is used in mills, marinas, mines, industrial, commercial and residential facilities. Common uses also include motor leads, portable lights, battery chargers, portable stage lights and portable machinery. It is also perfect for industrial plants, steel mills, breweries, theaters, process facilities, and construction settings. It is also suitable for National Electric Code Article 400 applications. The cable exhibits premium flexibility and is resistant to chemicals, deformation, acids, oil, water, sunlight, and air. The voltage rating is set at 600. A multiconductor cable is suitable for circuit branching and direct burial. The temperature range is -40°C to 90°C. SOOW electrical cable maintains its flexibility in both hot and cold applications.

Also Known As:

6/2 SOOW Portable Power Cable, 6/2 SOOW, 6/2 SOOW Power Cord, 6/2 SOOW Portable Cord, 6/2 SOOW Service Cord, 6/2 SOOW Service Cable, 6/2 SOOW Cord, 6/2 SOOW Cable, 6/2 SOOW Wire, 6/2 SOOW Flexible Power Cable, 6/2 SO Cord, 6/2 SOOW Control Cable.

Standards:

  • Mine Safely and Healthy Administration, MSHA
  • CSA certified
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substance Detective, RoHS compliant

Construction:

Conductor:

Stranded, bare, and fully soft annealed copper conductor, Class K per ASTM B174. Suitable for harsh conditions.

Insulation:

SOOW Cord UL/CSA has an EPDM l insulation. EPDM is an initial for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. EPDM is a synthetic rubber that has the ability to be deformed into the required shape. It is also elastic with excellent tensile strength of about 1000 PSI (pounds per square inch). Tensile strength gives it a good resistance to breaking, even under tension. It has a 300% flexibility that enables it to regain its original shape and size after a stretch.

EPDM is a good insulator due to its excellent resistance to severe weather, acids, alkalis, aging, water, ozone, sunlight and oxygen. This excellent resistance ensures the conductor remains effectively functional throughout its service life with no physical or mechanical distraction.

Jacket:

Carolprene jacket has superior mechanical strength, and excellent resistance to abrasion, UV, weather, moisture, oil, acids.

FAQ's

What is SOOW cable?

SOOW cable is a versatile and durable portable control cable designed for various industrial, commercial, and outdoor applications. The acronym SOOW stands for:

  • S - Service Cord (Heavy Duty)
  • OO - Oil-resistant insulation and Oil-resistant outer jacket
  • W - Weather and Water-resistant
What are the common applications of SOOW cable?

SOOW cables are flexible, durable, and resistant to harsh industrial environments. Common applications include:

  • Machinery in industrial environments
  • Outdoor events
  • Construction sites
  • Temporary power setups
  • Portable tools and equipment
  • Lighting fixtures in outdoor and industrial settings
  • Control systems
  • Power lighting and sound equipment in the entertainment industry
  • Emergency and temporary power needs
What are the particular applications of 6/2 SOOW?

The 6/2 configuration, with its two conductors, is generally suited for applications that do not require a neutral or where the grounding requirements can be satisfied separately. This might include straight power applications where only line and neutral (or line and line for 240V applications) are needed without an additional ground wire within the same cable.

  • Heavy-duty tools and machinery
  • Portable generators
  • Lighting installations
  • Outdoor events and festivals
  • Temporary power needs
  • HVAC systems
Is SOOW Cable Tray-Rated?

SOOW cable is not typically tray-rated despite having some common characteristics like oil resistance. Tray cables usually have thicker jackets and more robust insulation.

Is SOOW Outdoor-Rated?

SOOW cable is rated for outdoor installations, as outlined in the letter "W'' in its name, which stands for weather and water resistance. The cable is resistant to moisture, UV, and temperature fluctuations. The SOOW jacket is additionally resistant to oil. However, you should pick a cable with a better UV-resistant characteristic for installations directly exposed to sunlight.

What is the difference between black and yellow insulation for SOOW Cables?

Yellow SOOW cables are more visible than black ones, so they can be used in safety-critical environments. Black cables can absorb more heat than yellow cables when exposed to sunlight, which might be a consideration in outdoor applications. You can also choose to use black or yellow cable for color-coding purposes.

What does the UL rating mean for SOOW cable?

The UL rating means that the cable meets the safety standards Underwriters Laboratories (UL) developed. The rating verifies the cable's weather, water, and oil resistance. The rating also verifies that the cable can be used in industrial, commercial, and outdoor settings. UL also conducts ongoing factory inspections to ensure consistent compliance with the applicable standards to ensure that the standards are maintained over time.
