8/2 SOOW Cable
8/2 SOOW Cable is a portable service wire sized 8 AWG with 2 conductors. The SOOW cable is categorized based on AWG sizes. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge which is a standardized system for naming wires. 8 gauge means that the conductors are of 3.26 mm each. The 8 AWG 2C has a good performance and durability in industrial applications. It’s mostly used for heavy duty applications of up to 600v as long as the operating temperature range falls within -400C and 900C. The words SOOW are abbreviations whereby ‘S’ stands for Service, the ‘OO’ means that the cable is resistant to oil and changes in weather while the ‘W’ stands for insulation and jackets that are resistant to water.

The conductors used in this cable are made of annealed copper. Annealing is the process by which raw copper is heated consistently till it gets soft and flexible. Annealed copper conductor is advantageous because it can easily be rolled during transportation and very easy to install in cable trays and ducts without interfering with the structure of the conductor. It also has a high conductivity rate of 40 amps since the conductor has a low resistance to the flow of current. The copper conductor is of class K stranding, 65/26 in accordance to ASTM B 174.
Stranding is done to enhance flex life of the cable and carry more current. The size ensures that is transmits the desired load of current without overheating and causing voltage surges above permissible limits.
The 8 AWG 2C single phase cable insulator is made of Ethylene Propylene (EPDM). EPDM is a flexible, water-tight rubber product of saturated chains of polyethylene. Whenever there is a conductor it is crucial to put an insulator in place to safeguard the cable handler from electric shock by preventing direct contact with the conductor. It also protects the conductor from external damages that may affect its performance. This material is robust and can withstand various types of harsh impulses including mechanical impact and abrasive forces. It can also withstand oil, UV light, industrial solvents, acid, and changes in weather, moisture and water that are common in the industrial environment.
The 8/2 SOOW Cable jacket is Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). The jacket is responsible for protecting the inner components of the cable from damage including the insulator. This material is relatively strong and can withstand any abuse put to it. It is resistant to sunlight, oil, water, flames and abrasion. With this the cable can last up to lifetime without replacing. Flexibility is also makes it very easy to install.
