Fiber optic Cable

Pros & Cons of Fiber Optic Cable

With the ever-going battle between Verizon Fios and Xfinity, we hear both of them talk about a fiber-optic network, and a lot of us nod our head and agree but do we really even know what that means?

If you're honest and just admitted to yourself that you also have no idea what a fiber-optic network is — don't worry, we here at Nassau National Cable will give you all of the pros and cons of a fiber-optic network.

Let's start with the basics; fiber optic cables are network cables that are consisted of glass fibers as thin as human hair. These glass fibers can transport a higher bandwidth and transmit data much further than standard wire cables. The majority of the world’s internet, telephone and cable TV is supported by fiber optics.

Pros

Security - All major businesses depend on a high level of security to protect themselves from unwanted hackers and thieves. The data in fiber optics is extremely secure and can help keep your business safe. Hackers are unable to listen in on the signal as it is transmitted because fiber-optic lines do not radiate signals. On top of that, any breach that causes a physical break in the system will result in a total system failure.

Connection - The quality of a connection is what will help give you the quickest internet speeds, quality of the picture on television, and the clearest quality of voice over the phone. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a disturbance in the air caused by electromagnetic radiation. Too much EMI in the air and the quality of a signal with normal wire is bound to degrade or weaken. Fiber optic cables are designed to be highly resistant to EMI, as well as have a low rate of bit error.

Cons

Damage - Due to a thinner and lighter makeup, fiber is, therefore, more delicate than ordinary metallic wiring. Building renovations and rewiring can result in accidental cuts in lines because of how small the cables are.

Fuse -  Due to the high power of fiber optic lines, when running at high power, multiple networks can be in danger of a fiber fuse. A fiber fuse can occur when too much light meets an imperfection in a cut of fiber. A fiber fuse is capable of destroying great lengths of wire in a very short period of time.
