18/4 SOOW - Black
18/4 SOOW is a 7 amps cable which supplies up to 600 volts of electrical current. The 18/4 SOOW black cable is available at a minimum length of 10 FT and a maximum length of 1000 FT. the black cable comprises of 4 conductors, an insulation and a jacket. The conductors are made of annealed stranded bare copper, Ethylene Propylene insulation and Chlorinated Polyethylene. All the materials making up the cable possess great features that ensure the portable cord performs as per the expectations regardless of the harsh working conditions that may be surrounding the cable. The cable weighs only 98 Lbs per 1000 Ft and thus is very portable. It has been taken through a series of tests to approve it safe for use. The most outstanding features of the 18/4 SOOW Cable are:
Key features of the 18/4 SOOW Black
• 0.030 inches insulation wall outside diameter
• EPDM insulation
• CPE jacket
• Meets and exceeds all UL flame and MSHA specifications
• 4 conductors
• Fully annealed stranded bare copper conductors
• 16/30 conductor stranding
• 18 AWG gauge size
• 98 Lbs per 1000 FT
• Flame retardant
• 7 amps
• Highly flexible
• Oil, water, ozone, chemical, abrasion and sunlight resistant
• 600 volts
• Black
Conductor
The conductor of the 18/4 AWG SOOW black cable can properly fit into a circuit dust because it’s outside diameter is 0.390 inches. The cable comes fitted with 4 conductors all of which are made of annealed stranded bare copper. Copper is used as the most ideal conductor since it transmits electric current with so much speed. The conductor is taken through the annealing and stranding processes. These processes aim at ensuring the cable is flexible, malleable and foldable. They make the installation and termination processes easy and manageable. The conductor stranding is 16/30 and has been made according to the ASTM B 174 standard. All the 4 conductors are colored differently so as to identify them easily and what each conductor does.
Insulation
The insulation of the 18/4 SOOW black is placed after the copper conductor. Its main duty is to protect the conductor against chemical physical damage. The insulation of this cable is made with Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM). EPDM is a rubber like material that is flexible and easy to deal with. EPDM has excellent dielectric strength, durable, resistant to oil, water, chemicals, sunlight and ozone. This ensures the cable operate in either favorable or unfavorable weather conditions. The EPDM insulation shields the user from getting electrocuted.
Jacket
The jacket is the most visible part of this cable as it is black in color. The 18/4 SOOW black cable has been made of Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). Chlorinated polyethylene is a flexible, sturdy and durable rubber like material. The CPE jacket houses the insulation and the conductor. It protects them against, chemicals, ozone, sunlight, water, and oil and weather changes. Even when fully submerged in water the CPE protects the cable to perform as is expected. It is for this reason that this cable is at times used in maritime environments. The CPE is also flame retardant as it produces a unique compound during combustion that enables it not get consumed by fire.
Industrial approval and certification
The 18/4 SOOW black cable has been tried and tested by a number of international bodies. The conductor stranding is in accordance with the ASTM B 174 standard. The following standards and bodies approve the 18/5 cable;
• NEC 501.140 Class I Division 2
• NEC Article 400
• MSHA
• RoHS
Applications
This cable is able to supply up to 600 volts of power making it ideal for heavy duty power transmission. It is thus used often in industrial set ups. The 7 AMPS portable cable is ideal for internal and external purposes. Itcan be used in areas whose temperatures can drop as low as -400 C and areas with temperatures that can shoot as high as 900 C. The cable is flexible enough to be cut according to the needs and wants of the user. The 18/4 SOOW black can be utilized when dealing with handy compressors and industrial machinery and has controls of such as push buttons and systems for water purification,
