18/5 SOOW - Black
Weighing only 116 Lbs per 1000 Feet, the 18/5 SOOW cable is portable cord you can carry with you when covering a wide area during installation or termination. It is denoted as 18/5 because its size is 18 AWG and comes with 5 conductors. The conductors are housed in an insulation made of EPDM and then followed by a CPE jacket. The cable has been constructed according to various international guidelines and thus is safe for all to use. Some of the bodies approving it include MSHA, CSA, RoHS, UL and NEC. The conductor stranding which stands at 16/30 has been put up in line with the ASTM B 174 standard. The cable is outstanding because it is resistant to water, oil and weather changes. It comes at a minimum length of 10 Feet and a maximum length of 1000 feet.

Conductor
This portable power cord is a multi-conductor coming with 5 conductors. All the conductors are colored differently to easily identify them. The conductors make this cable a versatile one as its size ranges from 18 AWG to 2 AWG. All the 5 conductors are made of fully annealed stranded bare copper. The conductors have been taken through the annealing process which makes the conductors flexible, foldable and malleable. It is easier to deal with a flexible cable during installation as compared to a rigid one. The cable is rated as a 600 volts cable and thus used for heavy duty power supplication. It can however still be used for either low or medium voltage power supply. The 18/5 SOOW black cable transmits power at 5 amps. The conductor stranding stands at 16/30 and this is in line with the ASTM B 174 standard that regulates the formation of conductor strands.
Insulation
The insulation is placed after the conductor and its work is to protect the conductor from chemical and physical harm. This portable cord has an insulation made of premium grade oil resistant Ethylene Propylene (EPDM). EPDM is a synthetic rubber which possesses great features making it the most ideal material. It has the ability to protect the end user as well from being electrocuted and from a short circuit. The Ethylene Propylene is resistant moisture, chemicals, abrasion, ozone and sunlight. This enables the conductor to perform as expected for a long period of time.
Jacket
The jacket is the outermost part of the cable. It is black in color. The jacket of the 18/5 SOOW black is made of Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). The CPE jacket plays host to the copper conductor and the EPDM insulation. Just like the EPDM insulation, its work is to protect the conductor. It also shields the insulation from all manner of damages.CPE is an outstanding jacket because during combustion it does not burn up leaving the cable naked. Rather it produces a certain compound that enables the cable to be flame retardant. This goes a long way in ensuring the cable remains safe for use even in the event of a fire break out. Chlorinated Polyethylene is also resistant to water, oil and sunlight. These features ascertain long life of the portable cord.
Industrial approval and certification
The 18/5 SOOW black cable has been taken through a series of tests and has been approved various international bodies that deal with electrical cables and wires. The conductor stranding is in accordance with the ASTM B 174 standard. The following standards and bodies approve the 18/5 cable;
• NEC 501.140 Class I Division 2
• NEC Article 400
• MSHA
• RoHS
Applications
The 18 AWG cable is a safe cable to be used for internal and external purposes. Its temperature standings are -400 C to 900 C. this is to say that it can be used in areas whose temperatures are as low as -400 C and areas with temperatures as high as 900 C. The 18/5 SOOW black is ideal for systems for water purification, handy compressors and industrial machinery and has controls of such as push buttons.
