250-4 Type G Portable Power and Mining cable
250-4 Type G Portable Power and mining cable is a heavy duty industrial cable majorly used in mining and power supply applications. It isone of the many cables under the Type G cable family. It has a robust design which makes it a good choice over other mining cables. 250-4 Type G power and mining cable is a 250 gauge wire with four conductors, which means each of the conductors measures 250 AWG. It meets the standards set by international agencies for mining and safety.
Mining applications involve a lot of strenuous and delicate processes including blasting rocks, explosions, excavations and hard core drilling. These processes require tough cables that can withstand harsh environments while at the same time transmitting large amounts of power.This is where the 250-4 type G cable comes in handy. It can support a host of applications as long as the voltage rating does not exceed 2000v. Not only is it robust but also a versatile industrial cable. Apart from mining, the 250-4 Type G cable can be installed in residential buildings, commercial buildings and marine environments.
The cable has an amazing resistance towards extreme temperatures. Most mining cables are affected by extremely low and high temperatures, the type 250/4 Type G cable can withstand ice cold and high temperatures and still work properly, an attribute that makes it ideal for dry and wet environments.
Key features of the 250-4 Type G portable power and mining cable
• Has four copper conductors
• 250 AWG copper wire
• Has a copper stranding of 627/24
• Weighs 6296 LBS per 1000FT
• 308 Amps current
• CPE jacket
• EPDM Insulation
• Maximum voltage rating of 2000v
• Meets UL, CSA, RoHS and MSHA flame test
Construction
250-4 Type G cable has a tough design which is composed of four copper conductors, EPDM insulation and a reliable CPE jacket that holds the whole construction.
Conductors
Conductors are located at the core of the cable. They transmit power from one point to another in any electrical cable. The conductors of the 250-4 type G cable are made of annealed stranded bare copper which is in line with ASTM B 174. Copper is a good conductor of electricity but annealing and stranding makes it even a better conductor since they enhance its performance. The stranding increases the surface area to carry more current and the ductility of the cable. Therefore the cable can easily transmit large amounts of power up to 2000v without much hustle. Annealing involves heating of hard drawn copper until it becomes soft and flexible; this is done to enhance flexibility and ductility. Flexible copper conductors are easy to work with, install and transport.
At any given time the conductors may conduct excessive current which can be dangerous therefore a copper drain wire is fitted in the cable to omit current to the ground. The drain wire has a green insulation for identification. The conductor can operate in temperatures between -400C and 900C in both wet and dry environments respectively.
Insulation
The insulation protects the conductor from damage while at the same time also protects the user from electrocution. It can also be used for identification during installation considering its color coded. 250-4 type G power cable has an ethylene propylene (EPDM) insulation. EPDM is a reliable material since its resistant to oil, water, sunlight, chemicals and industrial solvents. The insulation is also resistant to physical damages caused by impact from falling rocks with makes it ideal for shaft mining in caves and deep mining.
Jacket
Cable jacket is the outermost layer of the cable. It acts as an added reinforcement to the insulation since it also protects the cable from external damages. Not only does it protect the cable but also holds all the cable components together. The jacket is made of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE). CPE is used because it is tough and offers resistance against water and oil. With this attribute you can comfortably use it in oil rigs and marine environments without experiencing any malfunctions. Furthermore, the jacket is resistant to abrasion, impact, industrial solvents, ozone, moisture and acids.
It is flexible and has great tensile strength which means it is less likely to succumb to tearing and breaking when exposed to stress.
Approvals and certifications
250-4 Type G cable has been tested by numerous standards organization for mining applications. This proves that the cable is genuine and safe for use. The cable is approved by the following organizations;
• UL
• CSA
• MSHA
• NEC Article 400
• RoHS Compliant
Applications
250-4 Type G cable is heavy duty mining cable. However the cable can be used in other industrial applications which require large amounts of current up to 2000v. These applications include;
• Oil drilling platforms
• Portable power generation equipment
• Mineral processing facilities
• Mining cable
• Shipyards and marinas
