Seemed awful small for #4 Wire

I purchased this wire to feed a small piece of 480v, three-phase equipment in my shop. Upon the initial inspection of the wire, the armor shielding seemed small. I had a small piece of #6 4/3 W/GRND to compare it to. The conductors in the #6 wires were actually about 0.1" greater in diameter. Being that this application was near the ampacity rating for #4 aluminum wire for a 50' run, I was afraid to use it. However, it was still an excellent value and I am sure I will find another application for which it is better suited. Other than that, the quality of the wire and the armor shielding was very good.

Great for what it is

I made the mistake of buying this (4 AWG) to save money compared to copper (6 AWG). It saved me about $50 for the amount I bought. It would have been immensely easier to terminate the smaller, more flexible copper wire. This stuff is too stiff to use inside anything but the largest boxes. Heating with a heat gun helps, but it's still a challenge.

That said, as long as you know where it's good and where it's not, it works great. Very good quality, and NNC handled my first order with them perfectly.

4/3 W/GRND Stranded Aluminum Conductor Interlocked Armor MC Cable

4-4-4-6 Metal Clad (MC) Cable with Ground, Aluminum Armored, Stranded Aluminum Conductors

Allowable Ampacity for 4-3 W/GRND ALUMINUM METAL CLAD CABLE at 75°C: 65 Amps

Applications:

Aluminum MC cable, or aluminum metal clad cable, is an electrical wire used under high ambient temperature in power distribution, particularly in feeder, branch, and service ones, in diverse purpose buildings. The MC cable is also used for diverse circuits, such as control, signal, power, and lighting ones, as well as this electrical cable is used for installations, air-handling spaces, places of assembly, aerial applications, cable tray and raceways, IT equipment, and hazardous locations.

Also Known As:

4-3 metal clad cable, 4-3 mc cable, 4-3 mc wires, 4-3 cable metal clad, 4-3 aluminum clad wire, 4-3 mc feeder cable, 4-3 electrical feeder cable,  4-3 electrical wire feeder, 4-3 isolated ground mc cable, 4-3 aluminum mc cable.

Standards:

  • UL 44, UL 1569 for type MC

  • ICEA S – 95-658

  • NEMA WC70

  • Federal Spec A-A59544 (formerly J – C – 30B)

  • IEEEE 1202 70,000 BTU vertical flame test

Construction

Conductors:

MC wires conductor is an 8000 series aluminum conductor. These conductors are also light, soft, and flexible, hence easy to work with, especially during installation.

Insulation:

The aluminum clad wire has a color-coded cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation, which improves the service life of the cable. XLP is resistant to abrasion, heat, corrosive chemicals, moisture, and sunlight, making the cable withstand the punishing outdoor conditions. Due to color coding, it is easily identifiable and non-conducting, which keeps the user safe from shocks.

Armor:

The armor of the MC feeder cable is an overall aluminum interlocked armor.
