6/2 SOOW Cable Black
SOOW is a large category of cables comprising of different cords and among them is the 6/2 SOOW RoHS black. The 6 gauge 2 conductor is designed to operate in industrial and marine environments. These environments call for cables with the ability to withstand harsh conditions. It is resistant to oil weather and water. All these are attributed to the effective jacket and insulation materials.
This cable comes in different sizes depending on the length of the area of application. It’s often sold per foot. The cable diameter size is denoted as AWG which stands for American Wire Gauge. This is a 6 AWG SOOW cable with two conductors. 6 AWG is roughly 4.11mm diameter so the cable diameter easily fits into many conventional wire ducts and trays. It is a medium sized cable.
Like many SOOW cables, this one also has a 600 volts rating and thus ideal for low to medium duty work such as industrial machinery set ups. It also has the ability to transmit electric current at 55 amperes. With a conductor stranding of 101/26 and weight of 0.510lbs per feet, the 6/2 SOOWRoHS cable is still a flexible cable to fold and carry around during installations without interfering with the conductors, insulation, paper filler and jacket.
This portable cord has two copper conductors. These are fully annealed stranded bare copper. Annealed copper is easier to deal with as it is flexible and easily cuts according to one’s needs. A portable cord is required to be very flexible so as to be easily transported from one point to another. This also helps in the installation and termination processes. The conductor strand is 101/26 and is in accordance with the Class K stranding as per ASTM B 174. The outside diameter of the cable is 0.790 inches enabling the cord to easily fit into the duct circuit.
The 6/2 SOOW RoHS black cable has an insulation made of Ethylene Propylene Monomer (EPDM). The insulation plays the role of a guard to the conductors. EPDM is a rubber with outstanding features. Since the environment in which this cable operates in is at times oily, EPDM comes in handy to protect the cable from the oil. It has been made for premium grade oil resistance. EPDM also has low corrosion and excellent resistance to moisture, water, ozone and solvents. It therefore increases the life of the portable cord.
The jacket provides an extra layer of protection to the conductors. The jacket of the 6/2 SOOW black cable is made of Chlorinated Polyethylene. Otherwise known as CPE, the jacketing material has several benefits it comes with. It has the ability to work in severe conditions as it is resistant to industrial chemicals, water, ultra violet rays, ozone and water. In the event of a fire breakout, the CPE changes to a fire resistant compound. This protects the conductors and ensures that even the end user is safe from any risky occurrences that may come about. Apart from its high endurance to chemicals, CPE is also a durable material with great anti-aging properties.
Approvals and certifications
The 6/2 SOOW RoHS black portable cord has been taken through a number of tests and has been approved by a number of international bodies that deal with electrical wires and cables, which include the following:
- Class K stranding per ASTM B 174
- NEC 501. 140 Class I Division 2
- NEC Article 400
The jacket and insulation materials forthe 6/2 SOOW black cable enables it to be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. Its high voltage rating, 600 volts, allows the cable to be used in heavy duty industrial applications. The cable is used in systems of water purification, industrial machinery, handy compressors and in controls for instance in push button remotes. The cable can be used in maritime applications thanks to its ability to resist water and oil.
