8/5 SOOW Cable Black 600V
The 8/5 SOOW Cable is one among many SOOW cables under the larger SOOW category. It is a portable cord with great resistance to weather, water and oil. The 600 volts cable is used in low to medium duty applications such as marine rigs, ships, water purification systems and industrial set ups. It is listed and approved by Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), this portable cord is a safe cable to work with. As the name insinuates, the cable is an 8 gauge size with 5 conductors.
Certifications and approvals
Electrical cables and wires such as the 8/5 SOOW Cable are tested for safety purposes, they are also constructed in line with the stipulated standards. The stranding of this cable is in line with the class K stranding as per ASTM B 174 which spells out the formation of conductor strands. Type 8/5 SOOW Cable-black is approved by the following standards;
- Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)
- Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
- NEC Article 400
- NEC 501.140 Class 1 Division 2
Conductor
This cable has 5 fully annealed stranded bare copper conductors. It is easy to manipulate during installation and termination because of the annealing process the conductor has gone through. Annealing makes the conductor flexible and foldable. Without this annealing the cable would be stiff and rigid hence difficult to cut and bend according the user’s needs.
The conductors have little resistance tocurrent flow. This is owed to the fact that the conductors are fully annealed stranded bare copper which is well known to have high conductivity and high ampacity rates. Type 8/5 SOOW RoHS black cable has 101/26 conductor stranding which is in line with the Class K ASTM B 174 that explains the stranding of copper cables and wires.
Insulation
Insulation works to shield the conductor from apparent damages, whether physical or chemical. This ensures that the conductor performs as is expected. The insulation also ensures that the user remains safe from electric shock during use. 8/5 SOOW black cable is insulated with a premium grade EPDM; which is also known as ethylene propylene monomer, EPDM, is a strong rubber and is not affected by UV rays, abrasion, weather, oil and water. Even when submerged in water, the insulation will still protect the conductor and work perfectly as required. The insulation thickness of this portable cord is 0.050, a right size to ensure maximum protection.
Cable jacket
8/5 Portable SOOW Cord insulation aims at protecting the conductor from damages. The jacket coupled with the insulation work hand in hand to protect the conductor from impacts during operations. The 8 AWG 5C black cable is jacketed with Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). CPE is well known for its ability to resist industrial solvents, water, oil, and Ultra Violet rays. In the event there is a fire break out, CPE transforms to a fire resistant compound protecting the insulation and conductors from further damage.
Size
This SOOW cable’s conductors’ voltage rating is 600 volts suitable for heavy duty power applications. Gauge is the standard used to measure the size of cables. The 8/5 SOOW Cable is an 8 gauge which is roughly 3.26mm diameter so it is relatively small, flexible, rounded cable that’s easy to install. The outside diameter measures 0.790 inches and thus enough to get into circuit ducts when carrying out installations. The cable is easy to carry around from one point to the other as it weighs only 0.510 lbs per feet. Its ability to transmit electrical current is 55 amps.
Applications
The cable is used in systems of water purification, industrial machinery, mining, ships, oil rigs, remote control systems, monitoring systems, handy compressors and in controls for instance in push button remotes. It can be used in marine applications thanks to its ability to resist water and oil. The jacket enables it to be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. Itsvoltage rating, 600 volts, allows the cable to be used in heavy duty industrial applications. For more information, feel free to get in touch with us and we’ll be glad to help.
