What is Concentric Stranding and how does it help protect the cable?

ThisAluminum 600V URD cable has concentric stranding. Stranded conductors are manufactured in a series of configurations. The most common and the best one is the concentric stranding or true stranding. The other stranded conductors are unilay concentric, equilay concentric, and unidirectional concentric.

You will find in concentric stranding a center wire that is bounded by one or more layers helically worn in a geometric pattern, reversed alternatively and increasing the length of the cable. These geometric patterns are produced in 7, 19, 37, 61 strands, which actually provides protection for the cable.  The strands are maintained in position throughout the entire length of the cable.
