Aluminum Conductor 35KV URD – 1/3 Neutral 133%

Underground 35KV Aluminum power cable is insulated, shielded and jacketed for underground, direct burial and ducts installation. It serves voltages of up to 35KV in wet and dry locations. This cable has a neutral 133% shielding to improve its workability.

Features

• Conductor

The 35KV 100% Cable is designed with a soft drawn 1350 aluminum series which are lightweight and flexible to handle. This is because they can easily be folded and twisted into smaller portions. They add to the lightweight aspect of this cable making it easy to lift and carry along especially during installation. The 1350 series of aluminum conductors are shielded with an extruded semiconducting thermoset for maximum performance. Shielding limits the conductors from direct impulses.

• Insulation

Aluminum Conductor URD cable has a black tree retardant and cross linked polyethylene insulation, which improves the durability and electrical conduction of the cable. TR-XLPE protects the cable and the user’s life as well. It keeps the cable from outdoor demanding environmental conditions because it is abrasive, chemical and heat retardant. This layer is also semi-conducting thus preventing the user from electric shocks. Bare solid copper wires are used to shield the TR-XLPE insulation.

• Jacketing

This is the outer protective layer of Aluminum 35KV URD power cable and is made of linear low density polyethylene. It is heat resistant and abrasive resistant, with three red stripes and sequential footage marks.

Standards and Certifications

• ATM B3, B8, B230, B231 and B609
• ANSI/ICEA S – 94-649

• RUS accepted

Applications

Aluminum Conductor 35KV Cable is installed through conduit system, underground ducts or direct burial. It is used in both wet and dry locations for power supply at voltages not exceeding 15,000 volts, at an operational temperature of 90 degrees Celsius for normal use.

Frequently Asked Questions - Aluminum Conductor 35kv URD

 What does “URD” stand for?

It means “Underground Residential Distribution wire” and URD wires are usually used for underground residential purposes.

Can the Aluminum conductor 35kv URD be used in wet locations?

Yes, it can. You can also use it for dry locations and for underground distribution also. It can be installed in a conduit or used in direct burial just as easily.  Some of these cables can be used at 35,000 volts or less while others can be used at 15,000 volts or less. They can be used for both three phase or single phase medium-voltage power.

How are the Aluminum conductors made for 35kv URD?

The conductors can be solid or compressed strand which is concentric meeting the ASTM specifications. The conductors are protected with an extruded semi-conducting shield that is thermoset. The shield can be easily removed from the conductor and is actually bonded to the insulation. Next comes the TR-XLPE insulation that has a high dielectric strength. There are two types of conductors available that have 100% and 133% insulation levels.

How is XLPE insulation different from PVC?

PVC is comparatively thinner and is mainly used in LT cables. XLPE, on the other hand, is thicker to withstand higher temperatures induced by higher current volumes in HT cables.   Although XLPE is thicker, the weight is less than PVC with a smaller bending radius. Hence it is easier to install XLPE cables and thus has a lesser installation cost. XLPE also has high dielectric strength with low dielectric loss and gives good chemical resistance.

How can I identify an Aluminum conductor 35kv URD?

The cables have red identification stripes on the polyethylenejacket which is extruded to fill spaces. Sometimes the cables can be without the red stripes in which case you can identify the cable with the surface print on the jacket. There will also be a lightning bolt symbol seen on the jacket.

What is the temperature tolerance for Aluminum conductor 35kv URD?

The cable can work continuously at 90°C and care should be taken that it does not exceed the recommended temperature.

What are the standards that the Aluminum conductor 35kv URD adheres to?

All our cables are made to industry standards and when they are made for specialized jobs, they adhere to those specifications such as the following as seen in this particular cable

• RUS accepted
• AEIC CS-8
• ASTM B-230 (Aluminum, 1350-H19 Wire), B-231 (Aluminum 1350 Conductors), B-609 (Aluminum 1350 Round Wire)
• ANSI/ICEA S-94-649
