Aluminum Conductor cables are flexible and lightweight because they are made of soft and malleable 1350 aluminum series. Aluminum has good sagging effect and high carrying capacity thus improving its electrical transmission.
This cable is insulated with a thermoplastic and flexible layer of tree-retardant cross linked polyethylene, which increases its service life by protecting it from harsh environmental conditions such as string sunlight radiations, moisture, corrosive industrial chemicals and mechanical deformations. The TR-XLPE insulation is shielded with solid copper wires which are helically applied. Shielding maintains the circular core of the cable as it prevents the conductors from collapsing.
The 35KV Aluminum Cable has a dielectric linear low density polyethylene jacketing which offers a superb chemical and mechanical protection. It is abrasive resistant and does not support friction because of its smooth surface. LLDPE is black in color and has three red strips.
It is primarily deployed in underground power transmission channels, conduit systems and direct burial. For normal use it serves up to 90 degrees Celsius, 130 degrees for emergency wirings and 250 degrees for use in short circuit.

How are the Aluminum conductors made for 35kv URD?
The conductors can be solid or compressed strand which is concentric meeting the ASTM specifications. The conductors are protected with an extruded semi-conducting shield that is thermoset. The shield can be easily removed from the conductor and is actually bonded to the insulation. Next comes the TR-XLPE insulation that has a high dielectric strength. There are two types of conductors available that have 100% and 133% insulation levels.
How is XLPE insulation different from PVC?
PVC is comparatively thinner and is mainly used in LT cables. XLPE, on the other hand, is thicker to withstand higher temperatures induced by higher current volumes in HT cables. Although XLPE is thicker, the weight is less than PVC with a smaller bending radius. Hence it is easier to install XLPE cables and thus has a lesser installation cost. XLPE also has high dielectric strength with low dielectric loss and gives good chemical resistance.
How can I identify an Aluminum conductor 35kv URD?
The cables have red identification stripes on the polyethylenejacket which is extruded to fill spaces. Sometimes the cables can be without the red stripes in which case you can identify the cable with the surface print on the jacket. There will also be a lightning bolt symbol seen on the jacket.
