Details

Aluminium Triplex Overhead Conductor Cable

Unlike Duplex Overhead Conductor Cable, the Triplex Conductor cable has three conductors with two of them being electrodes and one for neutral path. This cable is meant for power distributions from the utility lines to the consumer’s premises through the weather head. It has an operational voltage rating at 600 volts and temperature rating of 750C. A bare messenger wire is bonded closely on the two insulated aluminium conductors. They are individually insulated with the cross linked polyethylene which is black for protection.

Standards and Approvals

• ASTM B-399
• ASTM B-232
• ASTM B-231
• ASTM B-230
• ICEA S-76 – 474

Specifications

• Phase conductor; 2 AWG
• Conductor strands; 6/1 (7)
• Insulation thickness; 0.050 inches
• Neutral conductor size; 4 AWG
• Allowable ampacity; 150 Amps
• Weight; 0.228 lbs per feat

Features

• Conductor’s size

The two aluminium conductors are each compacted by seven strands of wires as per 1350-H19 aluminium series. Triplex Conductor cable measures 2 AWG in size adding to the 0.228 lbps weight of the cable per feat. The cable has seven stranded aluminium strands.

• Conductor’s workability

1350-H19 aluminium series are soft and malleable making the cable flexible. You will use little effort to twist and fold this cable to the desired portions for installation and shipment. Aluminium is lightweight and can easily be pulled, lifted and carried. This aspect makes the cable a cost alternative to labour intensive heavy copper cables, since less effort is enough to handle it.

• Insulation

The black extruded polyethylene is weather resistant, chemicals resistant, abrasion resistant, cutting and tearing resistant. These improve the electrical conductivity and the service life of the cable. Thermoplastic XLPE keeps the handler from suffering unnecessary electrocutions when handling the cable. This layer does not wear out when serving 600 volts at temperatures not exceeding 75 degrees Celsius. It has a thickness of 0.050 inches. XLPE is also flexible and eliminates any contacts between the live conductors and the messenger conductor.

• Messenger Wire

This is also known as the neutral conductor. It is made of 1350-H19 aluminium series or the 620 alloy. The messenger conductor is left bare and laid on the two insulated conductors, and performs as the neutral path for the cable.

Applications

Triplex Overhead Service Drop cable delivers three-wire single phase electricity from the pole-mounted transformers or secondary power lines, to the service entrance conductors. The cable is installed through overhead lines in both dry and wet locations at temperatures not exceeding 750C, and can as well be deployed with service splices at the pole in pole line secondary.

Question and Answer:

Frequently Asked Questions - Aluminum Triplex Overhead Conductor

What are the advantages of using aluminum in Triplex Overhead conductors?

Aluminum and copper are widely used as conductors as they both conduct electricity well. Although copper is widely preferred, it has been found that Aluminum has significantly more advantages.

  • Cost - Aluminum is found in abundance while copper has become scarce, which makes its price fluctuate.
  • Efficiency – aluminum conductors are able to carry almost 50% more current than copper of the same weight can and copper wires weigh almost double that of aluminum wire of the same specifications.
  • Physical characteristics – Aluminum is also lighterand more elastic than copper.

Is aluminum used in the pure form or as an alloy in the conductor?

Aluminum is rarely used in its purest form as it is too soft to be used for any mechanical or electrical purpose. The alloy that is used in this conductor is the 8000 alloy series, whichmakes the conductor more stable with increases performance. Also, alloys used to reduce the amount of oxidation when exposed to air.

Will the Aluminum Triplex Overhead conductor oxidize easily?

The aluminum overhead conductors that you get nowadays are made of a special alloy, namely AA-8000 which has a good resistance to corrosion. Plus, they also come with a thin layer of oxide which protects and prevents them from oxidation. The oxide layer is broken only during the termination process so that the necessary contact can be made between the wires or conducting surfaces.

What are the uses of Aluminum Triplex Overhead conductors?

These conductors are specially designed to meet the needs of overhead power lines, especially when there are many voltage levels.  They are used for power lines that call for extreme durability and strength as they have to cover large areas such as across rivers, valleys or large areas. Even if the cables have to be constantly exposed to snow, ice or extreme temperatures, they can still perform well.

What are the advantages of using Aluminum Triplex Overhead conductors?

These conductors can transmit a high volume of current across great lengths and are very strong. So you would have no worries even if the area was prone to snow and ice. The conductors do not corrode and has a good wear and tear resistance. Moreover, these cables are easy to install and have a low maintenance cost.

What are the limitations ofAluminum Triplex Overhead conductors?

These are extremely robust cables, but care should be taken to ensure that the cable is mostly working around 700C which is it’s permissible working temperature for long periods of time.  Also make sure that the stress of the cable does not go more than 60% at the lowest arc downing point.
