- Single conductor, sunlight-resistant, direct burial photovoltaic wire rated 90°C wet or dry, 600 V for interconnection wiring of grounded and ungrounded photovoltaic power systems as described in Section 690.31(A) and other applicable parts of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70
SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire, Single Conductor, 600 V
This is another type of specialty cable used purposefully in the solar power generation, transmission and distribution. It is designed with various specialized properties to suit it for the applications. Below are the construction properties of the cable.
Copper conductor is used in the construction of SunGen Global- Spec Photovoltaic cable. This cable is made up of two classes of copper conductors:
• Size 14 AWG through to 2 AWG tin coated and compressed copper. The cable is compressed to increase its strength and reduce bulkiness. Tin coating helps to prevent corrosive chemicals from destroying the conductors. This category of copper conductor is also class C stranded per ASTM B33 and B8.
• Size 1 AGW through 1000 kcmil. This class is also tinned and compressed but has smaller gauge size. The stranding is of class B according to the provisions of ASTM B33 and B8.
The cable has a lead-free ethylene Propylene Rubber is used as its insulation material. Being free from lead, the material is therefore environmentally friendly and less harmful to humans. The insulation is colored to contrast the jacket, it is strong and versatile to secure the cable conductor.
Cross linked Chlorinated Polyethylene (XL-CPE) is the insulation material for the wire. It is flame retardant, chemical, water, oil and sunlight resistant. This jacket is black in color and free from lead. It helps to secure the cable from any mechanical or chemical interference.
SunGen Global-Spec Photovoltaic wire is suitable for direct burial applications where it is used to provide interconnection wiring in both grounded and ungrounded photovoltaic power systems. Since it is sunlight resistant and versatile, the wire is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. The cable has high deformation resistance at high temperatures and stable electrical properties over a wide temperature range. It meets both cold bend and cold impact tests at a temperature of –400C. Its good flexibility and electrical conductivity are approved by the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Question and Answer:
What special instructions do I need to adhere to when using SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire, Single Conductor, 600 V?
SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 single conductor photovoltaic wire is made of copper and should be used in applications with not more than 90 degrees Celsius operating temperatures in wet or dry conditions. The voltage rating should not exceed 600 volts.
How do I identify SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire?
When you strip off the insulation, SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire has coppery appearance because it is made of copper material unlike aluminum which is light grayish in color. The wire has an insulation made of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) material.
What are the specifications for SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire?
This wire is described as UL Type PV, UL 44, RoHS Compliant and passes UL VW-1 Flame Test
What applications do I use SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire?
This wire can be used in wiring solar panels as well as photovoltaic arrays. It may also be used to connect service terminals with underground entrances. It is used for both grounded and ungrounded systems.
Is there a difference between Photovoltaic Wire and USE- 2 Solar Wire?
Yes, there are many differences between the two types of conductors. USE-2 wire is impact and crush resistant while Photovoltaic Wire contains a thicker insulation as well as jacketing and has better flexibility at lower temperatures while also being more sunlight and flame resistant. USE-2 solar wire is rated for voltages of up to 600 volts while Photovoltaic Wire is rated for voltages ranging from 600, 1000, to 2000 volts. So, be sure to check the voltage rating of the Photovoltaic Wire you want because it is indicated in the description. For instance, SunGen® Global - SPEC 5800 - Photovoltaic Wire Single Conductor 600 V is designed for use in applications of 600 volts. Another difference is that USE-2 Solar Wire is meant to be used in connecting PV modules and is used only with grounded arrays, on the other hand, Photovoltaic Wire is used in underground service entrance and for both ungrounded and grounded Photovoltaic arrays.
