Application:

Mainly used for severe environments where maximum conductor and electrostatic interference protection is required. Has an armor resistant to water, gas and corrosive elements into the electrical core. Instrumentation and process and control uses of claims commercial and industrial pulp and paper, mining, and petroleum applications. Permitted for continuous use at 105°C in wet or dry locations, 130°C for emergency overload conditions, and 250°C for short circuit conditions. May be installed indoors or outdoors, aerially, in conduits, ducts, cable trays or direct burial in circuits not exceeding 600 volts. UL listed as, NEC Type MC per UL Standard 1569 and is approved for use in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations. Impervious continuously welded and corrugated aluminum armor cable is recommended as an economical alternative to wire in conduit systems.

Conductors:

Soft bare annealed copper per ASTM B-3, Class B stranding per ASTM B-8 (compressed) or ASTM B-496 (compact).

Insulation:

Flame-retardant PVC Individual Shield: Aluminum-polymer tape providing 100% coverage with a flexible 7-strand tinned copper drain wire. 

Overall Shield:

Aluminum-polymer tape providing 100% coverage with a flexible 7-strand tinned copper drain wire 

Inner Jacket:

Flame-retardant PVC

Continuously welded armor – instrumentation cable PLTC Shielded MC-HL

Welded armor instrumentation PLTC cable is generally applied in applications that require maximum conductor and electrostatic interference protection. It has a voltage rating of 600 volts hence it is recommended for medium to light weight applications. The cable can also function in a wide range of temperatures including 1050C in both wet and dry environments, 1300C in case of emergency overload conditions and 2500C in case of a short circuit.

Conductors

The conductors are made from soft bare annealed copper which is in accordance to ASTM B-3 and ASTM B-8. Copper is durable and can last you a lifetime. Furthermore it is easily recyclable once worn out.

Insulation

Covering the conductors is the insulation which is made of a PVC individual shield with aluminum polymer tape and a stranded tinned copper drain wire. This material is resistant to flames, chemicals, radiation, corrosion, impact and moisture.

Overall shield

An overall shield is an added reinforcement to the cable. It is made using aluminum polymer tape and a stranded tinned copper drain wire.

Armor

It is resistant to mechanical damage and impact. The armor is made using impervious continuously welded and corrugated aluminum.

Jacket

It has an inner and outer jacket. It withholds the entire construction of the cable together. It is made using PVC. The cable jacket is resistant to sunlight, flames, corrosion, chemicals, industrial solvents, acids, abrasion and mechanical impact.

Where do you use continuously welded armor cables?


These are heavy-duty cables which are preferred for harsh and hazardous environments where the cable has to be constantly exposed to gases, liquids and vapors. This type of cable is preferred for use in places where electrostatic and conductor protection is required. It is most commonly used in mining, pulp and paper industries, petroleum and other commercial and industrial applications.


What is the continuous maximum working temperature of the cable?


As it is designed to be used in harsh environments, the cable can operate at even 250°C when there is a short circuit condition. However, the normal continuous maximum working temperature of the cable is 105°C for both wet and dry locations. The cable can also withstand 130°C when there is an emergency overload condition.


Is the continuously Welded Armor flame retardant?


Yes, it is and that means the cable will not propagate the fire, although it may not continue to work. The cable has a flame retardant insulation made of PVC and also a flame retardant PVC jacket. It has also undergone the following flame tests –

What are the features of the armor of a Continuously Welded Armor cable?


The armored cable is chosen for certain unique properties provided by the armor.  The armor will prevent water, oil or gas from entering the cable. It will also prevent corrosion of the cable even when continually exposed to corrosive elements. The armor can be continuously welded and corrugated aluminum.


How is the Continuously Welded Armor cable constructed?


The cable has soft bare annealed copper conductors in triads or shielded pairs. The copper is as per ASTM B-3 or ASTM B-8.  You can also see an insulation and an aluminum polymer tape working as an individual shield for 100% coverage.  It also has a tinned copper drain wire


What does PLTC stand for and what is it used for?


PLTC simply means Power Limited Tray Cable and is typically used for cables that need protection is hazardous locations. The PLTC is NEC and UL approved for use in various applications.
