What are Type P cables and are they suitable for marine and oil rigs?
These are special kinds of cables that are designed for use in harsh environments. What does “XLPO” mean?
XLPO simply means that the insulation is made of Crosslinked Polyolefin. XLPO generally can be taken to mean that the cable is LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) and it can perform well even at its maximum temperature of 90oC.
What are the unique properties that make these Type P cables perfect for oil rigs?
These cables exceed cold bends and cold impact, are resistant to drilling mud, are flame retardant and oil resistant. These cables come with an armor (optional) which has a basket weave and has bronze standard. The insulation of the conductors are made of cross-linked polyolefin which is flame retardant. The jacket is sunlight resistant CPE with Arctic grade and flame retardant. It is also resistant to oil, chemicals and abrasions. Type P cables also have a high strand count which makes it flexible so that it can be installed easily even under extreme conditions. The high strand count also makes the cable work well under vibrations. Some of these cables also have to be resistant to explosions.

Just as the name suggests, these Type P cables are specially designed for marine rigs. The conductors for this kind of Type P cable has a high strand count that is more suited for marine rigs than Type MC cables as they are resistant to vibrations. In case of fire, the fire retardant cable produces less toxic and less corrosive gasses. This is a desired property as marine rigs need to be protected against such gasses.
What is the finished cable test that these Type P cables undergo to make sure that it is suitable for oil and marine rigs?

What are the various tests that the insulation must have undergone to test their suitability?
One is the tension strength where the gauge marks are set 4” apart in accordance with industry standard requirements. Another is the Ozone test where the resistance to Ozone is tested by exposing the cable to concentrated ozone at 90°C and at the end of which there should be no cracks in the insulation. Next is the flame test which should be in accordance with ICEA where the maximum afterburn should not be more than 3 seconds for each flame application. The cables must also have passed the Copper Mirror and the Acid Gas Detection to test for corrosion resistance. It also has to pass oil resistance, crush resistance, abrasion resistance and smoke emission tests. These tests ensure that the insulation of the cable can function at full capability even under extreme conditions.
How will I identify the various cables from each other?
The cables will have identification markings with minimum information printed on its surface. You will find information such as armored or unarmored, the size and type of conductors and the voltage ratings. Moreover, you will also find additional information marked on the reels of the cables such as the conductor size and number of conductors, the date of manufacture and voltage rating.
What are the desired physical properties of the jacket of Type P cables that I should look out for when choosing cables for oil rigs?
Check the material of the jacket first whether it is Thermosetting Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene as per IEEE standards or Type CP jacket. Then check the various elements that the jacket is resistant to such as heat, cold, oil and gasses. Next, check out the aging properties, the tensile strength and elongation at rupture. When you want a cable for extreme cold conditions such as the arctic regions, then should pass cold bend on -40°C and cold impact should be on -40°C.
How should the conductors of Type P cables be manufactured?
