SOOW Cord UL/CSA
SOOW Cord UL/CSA is an internationally recognized cable which meets the required industrial standards and approvals especially by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and CSA. SOOW is an initial for S- Hard Service Cable, O- Oil resistant Insulation, O- Oil resistant Jacket, W- Weather and Water Resistant. This cable has a conductor made from a bare copper wire. The copper wire is insulated with an oil resistant Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM).
Due to the multiples cables an overall external jacket made from CPE is fitted. SOOW cord is highly durable and can last you a lifetime. Its durability is guaranteed by the high mechanical strength of the insulator and jacket. The cable is also specially designed for hard and harsh industrial environments, mining applications, power extensions and heavy tools.

SOOW Cord UL/CSA is fitted with a flexible class k bare Copper Conductor which is fully stranded. Copper is a transition metal with the highest and best electrical and thermal conductivity. Its excellent electrical conductivity is due to the half-filled outermost energy level which has a lot of space for many electrons to carry electrical current during conduction. The excellent thermal conductivity is also a plus since it ensures dissipation of the excess heat that builds up in the system.
Copper is also preferred due to its excellent tensile strength and creep resistance. The tensile strength gives it the ability to resist stretching, breaking and nicks that may cause failures while creep resistance minimizes the loosening at joints, connections and terminals. These two factors contribute to the overall durability and reliability of the cable.
Copper wire is very ductile, supple and flexible. Its ductility enables it to be drawn into wires of the required gauges and diameters. Its flexibility allows for folding, unfolding, bending and twisting without showing any sign of breaking hence ensures longer productivity and functionality of the ducts and circuits. The flexibility also eases its transportation and installation since it can be folded to fit into the cable trays and ducts.Stranding the copper wires reduces resistance and greatly increases the flexibility of the cable.
SOOW Cord UL/CSA has an EPDM material insulating the copper conductor. EPDM is an initial for; Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. EPDM is a synthetic rubber with a wide range of applications. It as an elastomer, meaning; it is plastic and has the ability to be deformed into the required shape. It is also elastic with excellent tensile strength of about 1000 PSI (pounds per square inch). Tensile strength gives it a good resistance to breaking even under tension. It has a 300% flexibility that enables it to regain its original shape and size after a stretch.
EPDM is a good insulator due to its excellent resistance to; severe weather, acids, alkalis, aging, water, ozone, sunlight and oxygen. This excellent resistance ensures the conductor remains effectively functional throughout its service life with no physical or mechanical distraction.
The insulator is very flexible as well to ensure effective portability.
A jacket is often fitted for cables with multiple insulated conductors to unit them. For the SOOW Cord UL/CSA is CPE, Chlorinated Polyethylene insulation is used. CPE is a thermoplastic organic material with excellent insulation and jacketing properties. Its mechanical strength is good and can withstand harsh physical and chemical conditions. It has good resistance to abrasion, UV, weather, moisture, oil, acids and bases. CPE is a flame retardant as well. The above mentioned physical and chemical properties give it a long durability without the constant need to replace your cables.
The jacket is also easy to strip and therefore does not require special tools during installation.
SOOW Cord UL/CSA cord has a temperature rating of -400 C to 900 C. The wide temperature range enables it to function in both dry and wet environments.
SOOW Cord UL/CSA is highly portable and manufactured to suit both outdoor and indoor industrial-grade and commercial applications. Since both CPE and EPDM have good oil and water resistance, the cable can be used in oil rigs since the jacket is not affected by the oil. Its water resistance enables it to function effectively in fully submerged water.
The cable being mechanically tough can withstand harsh environmental conditions and therefore used in portable machinery, portable stage lights, battery chargers, and motor leads service. Its applications are according to the Article 400 of the National Electric Code.

What is the difference between SOOW cord and SO cord?
The only difference between a SOOW cord and a SO cord is that the former has an oil resistant jacket and insulation while the latter has only an oil resistant jacket. Otherwise the specifications are all the same and both can be used for almost the same purposes. However, we see manufacturers making the SOOW cord more, as both are more or less the same price but you get more with SOOW.
What is the difference between SOOW portable cord and a type W power cable?
Both are used in portable tools, mining equipment, locomotives and cranes, but there are a few differences. The main difference is that, although you can choose any of these cables for your projects, Type W is generally chosen for heavy uses. Type W cables are preferred for conveyors, loaders, pumps and drills and can manage 2000V. SOOW portable cords, on the other hand, are used for the average type of job, which requires 600V but it can also handle heavy-duty jobs.
Can I use the SOOW cord for residential purposes?
Yes, most people use SOOW for standard types of equipment. For example, you might use it for residential purposes as well as for medium industrial purposes. What is the structure of the cord?
The SOOW cord is made of stranded bare copper, which adheres to ASTM B-173 and UL 62. The insulation comes with 90˚C EPR compound and is UL 62 again. You will find the insulated conductors cabled together with an outer CPE jacket which is 90˚C. Its sturdy composition makes it ideal for various purposes and it can also be used for permanent installation purposes as it is quite robust.
Can I use the SOOW portable cord for fire alarms?
Yes, as explained, it can be used for permanent installations, and also it is not fire-resistant, it can certainly be used for applications like fire alarms. It can withstand high temperatures such as 105ºC and so can easily work in harsh conditions such as factories and manufacturing units. You can also use the cord for other temperature control appliances and applications that use push-button stations.
