Details

Tray Instrumentation Control Cable EPR/CPE Shielded Pairs Overall Shield (SPOS) 600V

• Conductor

The EPR/CPE tray instrumentation cable is made of a Class B stranded copper which is tinned as per the international Standards of the ASTM B-8 and B-33. This conductor is rated 16 AWG - 17 AWG (American Wire Gauge). When pure copper is exposed to the environment, it easily forms an oxide coating (Copper II oxide) which lowers its electrical conductivity potential by increasing resistivity to the flow of electricity. To cub this effect, Copper is plated with tin which greatly reduces the corrosion effect on copper (through sacrificial protection), reduces electrical resistance, increases mechanical strength and prevents it from getting oxidized.
This tinned copper conductor is stranded into a concentric core which is structurally rigid but highly flexible. Stranding also makes the conductor very thick therefore reducing resistance and power losses.

• Insulation

Naked conductors are very dangerous since they carry live electricity which may cause high risks of accidents like electrocution and fire outbreaks. To prevent such unnecessary accidents, these conductors are insulated to ensure safety to the handler. This cable is insulated with Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) material which is a flame retardant. EPR is a synthetic elastomer with a highly saturated and stable backbone. It is highly preferred for insulation due to its resistance to weather, ozone and heat.

• Color Code

The cables are color coded in black and white colors in alternating patterns. The cables are also printed in alpha-numeric which basically for easy identification to avoid confusion during installation.

• Shielding

Due to high electrical interference during electrical conduction there is need for shielding. The cables are individually shielded with a 100% coverage on the conductors’ surface with aluminum/polyester foil shield.

• Temperature Range

Has a temperature range of -30°C to 90°C both in dry and wet areas.

• Voltage Rating

Works best at a maximum potential difference of 600Volts

FAQ Shielded tray cable POS paired overall shield and SPOS shielded

How to identify shielded tray cable POS (paired overall shield) and SPOS (shielded pairs overall shield)?

It is necessary that you are able to identify your cables so that you can make informed choices, especially when you want to place an order. First of all you must know about the wire size, which will tell you how big the conductor is and it is measured in AWG (American Wire Gauge). The insulation for the conductors will usually come in EPR or PVC.  POS cables will have an overall shield while SPOS will have shielded pairs with an overall shield.

Are POS/SPOS shielded tray cables the right choice for a conduit system?

Yes, they are but there are also many other cables available in the market that are suitable for a conduit system. However, these cables are economical and they come with a sheath that is virtually impermeable. Most of these cables come with PVC or EPR with TC-ER, individual shielding that comes with 100% coverage.

What are the different types of shields of POS and SPOS cables?

There are different types of shields available for both the POS and SPOS cables. The most common types of shields available in the market are the PVC flame retardant ones. You might also see ones with “ER” (Extended Run) which will have the same crush and impact specifications as that of an UL Type MC cable. You can also find TPE, EPR, CPE and Haloarrest jackets for shielded tray cables.

Why is an overall shield important?

An overall shield will be considered important only when the shielded tray cables are used under the following conditions –

  • Extreme environmental conditions –humidity level, temperature of work area

  • Installation method - especially if it has to be buried or has to be outdoors

  • Exposure to certain elements like oil or grease

  • High risk of fire

What is the difference between a POS and SPOS?

POS simply means that the cable has a single pair with an overall shield or jacket.  While SPOS is a cable that has shielded pairs that in turn are covered with an overall shield or jacket. Both types are used for wet and dry locations and also for any type of indoor and outdoor applications.

Is the insulation thickness a vital deciding factor for choosing a shielded cable?

The insulation thickness is a deciding factor for any type of cables, regardless of whether they are shielded or unshielded. It pertains to the conductor specifications, the voltage that it will be required to work under and the strength of the cable. Also, when the insulation is thick, it will affect the flexibility of the cable.
