18/3 SOOW - Black
18/3 SOOW black cable is a heavy duty power supply cable often used in industrial and mining sectors. It is an 18/3 cable because its size is 18 AWG and it comes with 3 conductors. The cable has the capacity to supply up to 600 volts of power at 10 amps. It is oil and water resistant and for this reason often used in oily and wet areas. The cable is able to perform in the harshest environments because it has been made of top notch quality materials. It contains a conductor mad of fully annealed stranded bare copper, an insulation made of ethylene propylene (EPDM) and a jacket made of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE). The cable weighs only 84 Lbs per 1000 FT and thus portable to move about with.

This is the inner most part of the cable and has been made of fully annealed stranded bare copper. The 18/3 SOOW black cable is a multi-conductor with 3 conductors. The conductor stranding is 16/30 and has been constructed as per the ASTM B 174 international standard. All the 3 have been colored differently to easily identify them. They are colored green, yellow and red. The conductor allows the cable to be versatile in its use as its size ranges from 18 AWG to 2 AWG. The conductor is highly flexible, malleable and foldable because it has been taken through the processes of annealing and stranding. Annealing is the process where the copper is heated up until it becomes deal with, cut and bend according to the needs of the user.
The three copper conductors of the 18/3 SOOW black cable have been insulated with a premium grade oil resistant EPDM material. Apart from being oil resistant, EPDM rubber is also resistant to moisture, sunlight, chemicals and abrasion. This ensures the cable performs well for a stretched time period regardless of the surrounding conditions. The EPDM insulation also protects the user from being electrocuted and also protects the cable in case of a short circuit.
The jacket comes after the EPDM insulation. Its main purpose is to protect both the conductor and the insulation from chemical and physical damage. This power cable has a black jacketing made of Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE). CPE is the most ideal material as it is water, sunlight and oil resistant. This indicates that the 18/3 SOOW black can be used in either hot or wet temperature. The jacket together with the EPDM insulation make the cable to be resistant to impacts and thus why it is ideal in marine and industrial set ups. The jacket is also flame resistant making CPE safe for use in the event of a fire break out. During combustion CPE produces a compound that makes the cable flame retardant.
Industrial approval and certifications
The 18/3 SOOW black has been created in line with different international standards and bodies. The following are the bodies, rules and standards the SOOW cable complies with;
• RoHS compliant
• MSHA approved for flame resistant in mining use
• National Electric Code article 400
The 18/3 SOOW black cable can be availed at a minimum length of 10 FT and a maximum length of 1000 Ft. The portable cord weighing only 84 Lbs per 1000 Ft, can be used in wet and dry locations as its temperature ranges from -400 C to 900 C. The cable remains flexible even when used in cold weather. The flame and oil resistant cable is used in motor leads, portable stage lights, portable lights and battery chargers. The SOOW cable is also used in areas that call for the National Electric Code Article 400 applications.
