About Tight Buffered Cable

A tight-buffered cable is a type of fiber optic cable where each optical fiber is individually coated with a thick, protective buffer layer. This design holds the buffer material in direct contact with the fiber, providing a high degree of protection against physical damage during handling and installation. This makes it ideal for indoor use, moderate-length networking, and runs that require frequent bending and handling.

Structure of a tight-buffered cable

  • Buffer layer: Each 250µm optical fiber is surrounded by a 900µm thermoplastic buffer layer that is bonded directly to the fiber. This provides immediate protection from physical impacts and crushes.
  • Strength members: The buffered fibers are typically wrapped with aramid yarn (like Kevlar) or fiberglass strength members. This increases the cable's tensile strength and protects the fibers from strain.
  • Outer jacket: A durable outer jacket, often made from low-smoke, zero-halogen (LSZH) materials for indoor applications, encases the entire cable structure. 

Common applications

  • Data centers: Used for patching switches, servers, and storage arrays within racks and cabinets.
  • Premise wiring: Deployed in office buildings and campuses for horizontal runs, risers, and runs to workstations.
  • Indoor/Outdoor applications: Cables with UV and water protection allow for runs that start outdoors and end inside a building.
  • Distribution and breakout cables: Tight-buffered cable comes in two main formats. Distribution cables have multiple buffered fibers under a single outer jacket, while breakout cables contain individual, jacketed tight-buffered fibers for maximum durability.

Uses a waterproof acrylate coating that is tightly bound to the fiber. While resistant, it is not as protected from water as a loose-tube cable.
